Size the shelter around the loaded trailer and the way you move it, not only around the watercraft. Measure the trailer’s widest point, the coupler-to-rear length with the skis loaded, the highest point, and the clearance needed to back in and walk around it. Compare those measurements with the structure’s clear opening and the site approach.

Use manufacturer dimensions as examples, then measure your own setup
Watercraft dimensions change by model and year. Yamaha lists the VX at 3.37 meters long and 1.24 meters wide on its official specifications page. Those are watercraft dimensions, not trailer dimensions or a recommended building size.
As one trailer example, Karavan lists its WC-1250-86 double watercraft trailer at 102 inches wide and 149 inches overall length on the manufacturer’s product page. Measure your own trailer because models and loaded overhang differ.
For scale only, a nominal 12-foot width is 144 inches. Subtracting the published 102-inch trailer width leaves 42 inches total before accounting for posts, clear-opening dimensions, maneuvering room, or walking space. A nominal 20-foot length is 240 inches; subtracting 149 inches leaves 91 inches before allowing for the tongue, rear overhang, access, and the exact location of the trailer. This arithmetic is a comparison aid, not a recommended carport size.
Translate measurements into a clear-opening request
Ask for the width between posts, usable height below the roof framing, and length available for the coupler and rear of the loaded trailer. Decide whether a tow vehicle, another trailer, or storage shelves will share the area. If you need those uses, measure them too rather than assuming they will fit beside the watercraft.
Leg height describes the side-post dimension, but usable clearance also depends on roof framing and the configuration. Give the provider the loaded height and ask for the actual clear opening shown on the drawing. Do not choose an opening based only on a general “typical” height.
Check the site and the documents
Record the property address, surface, grade, drainage, access route, and nearby obstacles. Ask the city or county about permits and setbacks, and confirm which anchor and foundation details are available for the proposed structure. Weather design criteria depend on the location and the exact building; see our California permit guide, anchor guide, and snow-load planning guide.
For a quote, send photos of the site and the measurements above, along with any manufacturer spec sheets for the watercraft and trailer. The dimensions guide can help you prepare the layout, and the project quote form can carry the location and configuration details.
